The focus of my career has always been business security – to provide businesses with the means to keep their data and information safe and protected. This priority is only getting more relevant – and more complex. In fact, 76% of US businesses have experienced a cyberattack in the past year. And, there has been a significant increase in cyber security events over the past 3 years for SMBs (small and medium-sized businesses). This is no longer just an issue for big enterprises – every business, no matter their size, needs to take steps to keep their data secure.
Small Businesses Have BIG Security and Compliance Needs
Local and federal governments and industries such as healthcare and finance are driving increasing compliance requirements and the need to secure personally identifiable information (PII). This means that many small businesses have large security needs – certainly large relative to their size.
HIPAA for local family doctors, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) for the small businesses who sell products to Europe, Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) to anyone who accepts credit card payments are a few examples. These aren’t just requirements for large businesses anymore – even the mom and pop shop needs to adhere to these standards. And, over the last 5 years, things have gotten more complex. Considering that 9 out of 10 breaches are ONLY potential, there’s a lot of pressure on an SMB to keep their data secure. It used to be, you only alert the appropriate authorities when an actual breach occured. Now, if you even think you’ve had a breach, you’d better let them know.
So, how does an SMB achieve “enterprise-level” security without an enterprise budget and an internal IT resources? Move to a cloud-based platform with the help of a trusted Managed Services Provider (MSP).
Cloud Done Right
There have been articles upon articles written about how safe and secure the cloud is. And at the highest level, that’s true – a cloud platform is a secure platform. But – and this is a big BUT – only if it’s done right.
In my opinion, the most effective way to protect data with the highest level of certainty is to move to Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD), hosted on Azure and managed by CloudJumper’s Cloud Workspace Management Suite (CWMS).
The combined WVD and CWMS solution is inherently more secure than previous cloud solutions. It’s a highly controlled environment with the built-in security and compliance features that Azure is known for. CWMS uses Least Privileged Methodology, ensuring that there are boundaries and walls around a client’s computing data. Files aren’t stored on physical computers – they’re up in the cloud, which means they’re protected from theft, viruses or malware. Also, since WVD is hosted on Azure, users can trust that compliance features are always automatically up-to-date with changes in mandated requirements.
And, let’s face it, it’s statistically probable that a business is going to have to deal with an attack (see that lovely 76% stat above). But, with a simple button click in CWMS, everything is backed up in on Azure, meaning you can simply recover from the previous day (or sooner, depending on which option you implement).
Cloud done right, using WVD hosted on Azure and managed by CWMS provides what businesses need when it comes to protecting information, while still allowing for all technical benefits to enable efficient business operations. It allows companies to take advantage of the benefits of the cloud, rather than just doing it for cloud’s sake.
And MSPs, with CloudJumper’s help can make the deployment and management of a cloud environment, including WVD, attainable for an SMB. An MSP can ensure that the business is cloud-ready, while accounting for performance, security and connectivity requirements. They have the experience, technological skill set and knowledge of industry best practices to properly configure a WVD environment. An MSP can help a business take full advantage of the best resources available to them – to harness the power of the cloud AND stay secure.
